Technical Advisors

Our core business is providing technical advice for Indigenous communities. We play a vital role in ensuring that the management, preservation, and interpretation of cultural heritage are conducted respectfully, safeguarding the cultural values, traditions, and legal rights of these communities. We facilitate communication, guide legal and heritage management processes, and support Indigenous communities in preserving their cultural heritage. As Technical Advisors, we engage in the following activities:

  • Ensuring Cultural Appropriateness: we provide guidance on how to respectfully approach Aboriginal cultural heritage aligned with Aboriginal protocols. This includes advising on culturally appropriate methods for surveying, excavating, and managing heritage sites, and ensuring that all actions align with the cultural values and practices of the Aboriginal community.

  • Facilitating Communication: liaise between project teams (such as archaeologists, developers, or government agencies) and Aboriginal communities, ensuring clear communication and mutual understanding throughout the process.

  • Navigating Legal Frameworks: We ensure that all activities related to Aboriginal cultural heritage are legally compliant.

  • Cultural Heritage Management Plans: We assist the development and implementation of cultural heritage management plans that outline how to protect and conserve Aboriginal heritage sites. These plans often include strategies for avoiding or mitigating impacts, as well as ongoing maintenance and protection of the sites.

  • Conducting Cultural Heritage Assessments: We provide expertise in assessing the cultural significance of sites, objects, or landscapes from a scientific, archaeological perspective. This involves identifying and documenting areas of cultural importance, evaluating potential impacts of development or other activities, and recommending appropriate management strategies.

  • Training and Capacity Building: We provide training to project teams, government agencies, and other stakeholders on the importance of Aboriginal cultural heritage and how to protect it effectively. This includes raising awareness of cultural sensitivities and protocols, legal requirements, and best practices in heritage management.

  • Facilitating Consultation: We organize and facilitate consultation processes with Aboriginal communities to ensure that their perspectives and knowledge are incorporated into heritage management decisions. This often involves working closely with Traditional Owners and Elders to ensure that their cultural knowledge and priorities are respected, appropriately communicated and protected.

  • Mediating Disputes: In cases where there are conflicts between development projects and the preservation of Aboriginal cultural heritage, we can act as a mediator, helping to find solutions that balance development needs with cultural preservation.

  • Ensuring Fair Outcomes: We strive to ensure that the outcomes of any negotiations or decisions are fair and equitable for Aboriginal communities, and that the cultural heritage is appropriately preserved for future generations.
